Gold developer Osisko Development has resumed site activities at the Cariboo gold project, in British Columbia, Canada, after a temporary suspension related to a safety incident on January 22.

A contractor died while working at surface in what the company determined to be an isolated incident, with operations having been suspended pending an investigation of the incident.

The company has been implementing a gradual reopening of its surface and underground activities on site over the last few weeks to ensure the health and safety of all employees and contractors.

Osisko currently has more than 250 personnel at Cariboo, which reflects the normal operating levels for the current phase of pre-construction work, early works and exploration activities.

The company says upgrades to the Bonanza Ledge water treatment plant are in the final stages of commissioning, with the facility expected to be fully operational in coming weeks.

Additionally, Osisko has completed 2.1 km of underground development from the existing Cow Portal into the Lowhee zone, as well as along the main access ramp through the Lowhee fault towards the Cow Mountain zone.

The company has encountered challenging ground conditions in and around the Lowhee fault, which has led to slower-than-expected development and the implementation of enhanced ground support.

Development rates are expected to improve as the ramp advances beyond this zone.

Moreover, Osisko is advancing infill drilling with three drill rigs underground and surface exploration with six drill rigs.

This while construction continues on a waste rock storage facility, a sediment control pond and other critical infrastructure on surface. Osisko has already completed an expansion of the site camp to 266 rooms, which should cater for peak construction requirements of the project.

Cariboo is anticipated to produce 1.8-million ounces of gold over a ten-year mine life. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
